Question: I think you're getting two different versions mixed up. Paige O'Hara starredin VENUS for the New Amsterdam Theatre Company in the mid-80s, with PaulaLaurence repeating her original role of Molly Grant. John McGlinn was notinvolved. The version that McGlinn did was for the BBC in early - mid 90s, alsostarring Paige O'Hara, but with Kim Criswell as Molly. Since it was broadcaston radio, there are plenty of tapes of it "floating around." Unfortunately,it's not nearly as good as the earlier New Amsterdam version with O'Hara andLaurence (can't remember who that conductor was).+++++ First of all, I was a founding member and head writer for the New AmsterdamTheatre Company (though I didn't write continuity for the "Venus" concert).Evans Haile was conductor of that concert. John McGlinn musical directed ourLEAVE IT TO JANE. Nevertheless, I stand corrected. I'd heard that John hadrecorded ONE TOUCH OF VENUS and was trying to have it released commercially. Iknew Paige O'Hara was part of the deal (After the New Amsterdam concert, for aspell, Paige actually held the rights for a "Venus" revival). I assumed PaulaLaurence was on the recording, since she often performed for John. But itmakes perfect sense that he substituted another McGlinn favorite, Kim Criswell.
Answer: Then you are to be congratulated, because they did terrific work. I thinkit's a shame that, with the proliferation of "concert musicals" troupes thesedays, New Amsterdam (and especially Billy Tynes) is all but forgotten. Theyweren't necessarily the first, but I think they were the most prominent onan ongoing basis there for a while.I remember shows included "Sweet Adeline," "Eileen," "I Married an Angel,""Jubilee (likewise starring Paula Laurence)," "I'd Rather Be Right," "Venus,"and the show that ended the company, "Sally." I'm sure I've forgotten some-- I know "Revenge with Music" was announced along with "Jubilee" but neverhappened I think.
